Week 7 - Ceilings

In this weeks chapter talking about ceilings, I learned there are more to just a ceiling in a room but there. ceiling in a room is one of the most important designs in a project because electrical has to coordinate with all other trades like fire protection, plumbing, and HVAC.

in a electrical lighting plan, you will see a reflected ceiling grid plan with lighting fixtures sizes that include 1x4's, 2x2's, and 2x4's. the lighting fixtures always have to be within the ceiling grid and they are always spaced in increments of 2'. it is important to think about HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection as well, we don't want to put a diffuser or grille on top of a light or we don't to interfere with sprinkler heads as well. The picture below comes from one of my surveys I did recently and we can see the lighting fixture are within the ceiling grid and are spaced out in increments of 2' but we all see a diffusers within the ceiling tile.

one of my favorite type of designs when it comes to ceilings is having HVAC, sprinkler systems, and electrical systems because you can see the round ducts the same color as the ope structure ceiling and yo can see conduit, junction boxes, and piping that goes the ceiling. I think this creates a more modernized answer industrial feeling but It all depends on the location typically I usually see this type of design in some offices, restaurants, and lofts.

in conclusion the design of a ceiling is just as important as the walls, floors, and the structural because there are so much that contributes to it with plumbing, fire protection and HVAC. "Is the ceiling open structure?" or "are there structural beams interfering with ductwork or lighting?" or "do we need suspended lighting fixtures?'.

  1. Hi Marco! I agree that ceiling design involves a lot of coordination between different systems. I also like the look of exposed ceilings because they create a modern, industrial feel while making the building’s structure part of the design.

  2. Marco,
I enjoyed reading your Blog post this week. The ceiling from your survey was an excellent example of the proper placement of ceiling tiles and light fixtures in a commercial space.
I also enjoyed the image of a open plenum within an office setting. 50/50 points
