Week 5 - Walls

Image
walls are more than just structures that separate rooms within a building or house depending of the type of wall they can carry plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. this weeks chapter I learned more about walls and the different type of materials they are made from. the three type of framing systems in a wall are stud walls, concrete and masonry walls, and structural frames walls. the most common one that are found in residential homes are stud walls. in stud walls they are usually made from steel or wooden material, the studs are typically spaced around 12", 16", or 24" on center of the stud. after framing, sheathing is added to cover the framing and it can be plywood or OSB.  concrete masonry walls and bearing walls are made from brick, stone, or reinforced cement but in the powerpoint it mentions that challenges include running electrical and plumbing lines. they are great for resisting winds, fire, and pests. they also help reduce noise from the outside.  I also f...

INT322 - Interior Building Systems Week 4

Image
this week's reading I learned about how structural systems work and the three different types of structural systems. The book mentions the following, bearing walls, stud walls, and columns or beams. load bering walls are a type of system that are found in residential home, how they work is fairly simple, the walls in the exterior help carry the load from roofs and the upper floor down to the foundations, the exterior walls are made of materials like concrete, steel, and masonry.  stud walls, are walls frameworks that include both horizontal and vertical cuts of material that make up a wall like the picture below. Stud walls are found in both commercial buildings and residential homes, they help divide room within interior spaces and also help distribute the load of the building. Apart from helping distribute weight and divide room with the building, they are also really helpful to house any electrical, plumbing, or HVAC lines because of the space it has within. columns and be...

INT322-1 Week 3: Site Considerations

Image
in this weeks reading in chapter 2, I learned about how interior designers are also an important part of the team because although they don't deal with any of the exterior, MEP, or structural aspect of the building, they are responsible for the interior space of a building. in the book "Sustainable Building Systems and Construction for Designers" by Lisa M. Tucker, it states that it's really important for an interior designer to be involved early in the design process because, the site has an impact on how the interior space of a building is shown. This includes factors like how much sun is being let in, will there be any glare, and the amount of electric lighting will be affected.  the sun in the winter and summer months, the sun in the summer will shine at a high angle while the sun in the winter will shine at a lower angle (see diagram below) during the winter the sun rays will hit more through the window because of the low angle creating a warmer space inside and...
